  • 1935
    Piedmont Mutual Building & Loan became Piedmont Federal Savings & Loan – the seventh financial institution in the nation to adopt a Federal Savings & Loan Charter.
  • 1935
    Nicholas Mitchell, the first of three generations of Mitchells began serving as President of the bank, followed by his son, N.W. Mitchell from 1960-1981.
  • 1960s–1970s
    Piedmont expanded its presence beyond downtown Winston Salem, with the opening of the Northside Branch on North Patterson Avenue, followed by Kernersville, Parkway Plaza, Thruway, and Sherwood Plaza.
  • 1973
    Piedmont moved beyond its Forsyth County borders and opened an office in Boone, NC.
  • 1975–1978
    Piedmont added the Parkview branch in Winston Salem and the North Wilkesboro branch.
  • 1981
    N.W. Mitchell’s son, Nicholas Jr. became the 6th president of Piedmont Federal. Soon after, the Clemmons Branch opened for business. Though the 1980s saw the failure of nearly 1/3rd of savings & loan institutions, Piedmont remained strong and viable, open for business every day.
  • 1999
    The bank gifted the Pepper and Crawford Building to the Downtown Winston-Salem Foundation and funds for maintenance.
  • 2003
    Piedmont Federal celebrated its 100th anniversary.
